Role of Rituals and Customs in the Marwari Wedding

Marwari is a Rajasthani language predominantly spoken in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Marwari is also majorly the native language of these states such as Gujarat and Haryana and in Eastern Pakistan. According to the census (2001), approx 20 million populations came out, who prefer to speak Marwari language. There are varied languages of Marwari.  

 
A Marwari wedding is celebrated with full of excitement and celebrations. Marriage occasion comprises various types of customary ritual formalities. These are the joyful moments when the both families enjoy every moment as happier days and moments. There are various customs and traditions which are held before the wedding or even after as well.  

 
Traditional Wedding Attire  


On the wedding day, Marwari groom wears a traditional Sherwani costume and a bride wears traditional saree or lehnga. They both look very beautiful and smarter personality outfit. 


Customs and Rituals  


These are the staple part of the wedding ceremony from the beginning to its end. All the religious and spirituals formalities are done during these holy traditional occasions. Customs and rituals play a great role to arrange matrimonial functions and parties with full of deep performance and participants.   
Engagement: This is the most interesting ceremony that takes a significant place before the wedding. Only men can participate in this wedding, function, not even the bride. When couple is considering to get final approval for their lifetime relationship as a husband and wife. Jhol and Pitti: On this wedding occasion the bride’s family is invited to participate in the wedding. This invitation card comes along with lots of offers.   
Ganapati Staphana and Griha Shanti: This ceremonial sacrament is holding a couple of days before the wedding. This is a holy Puja and havan arranged by both families for peace and flourishing.  


Toran: A bride’s house is decorated with toran for a surpassing welcome to the groom. A groom welcome will be made by the bride’s mother with a traditional aarti.  
Jaimala: This ceremony is very interested and excited when they glance at each other and offer floral garlands.   
Sindoor: This is a holy sacrament done by the groom when he puts vermillion to the bride’s forehead as this is a sign of his love.   
Bidai: Bidai is a sad moment when the bride takes vidaai from her Maika and visits towards her new home.
